# IA for Search, AI, and Emerging Technologies

## Course 3: IA for Search, AI, and Emerging Technologies

*4 weeks · November 2026*

As AI-driven systems, large language models, and intelligent search reshape how people find and interact with information, Information Architecture plays a critical — and evolving — role. This course examines how IA principles apply in AI-enabled environments and how you can design structures that support transparency, trust, and meaningful interaction.

**You will learn to:**

* Understand how AI and machine learning affect information organization and retrieval
* Apply IA principles to AI-enabled search and discovery experiences
* Recognize ethical, accessibility, and trust considerations in AI-driven systems
* Describe the future role of IA in intelligent information environments

**Weekly topics:**

* Week 1: IA in the Age of AI — how AI changes information discovery, traditional search vs. AI-driven retrieval, the continued relevance of IA
* Week 2: Structuring Information for AI Systems — metadata, semantics, and structured data; IA's role in training data; designing for explainability
* Week 3: Trust, Ethics, and Accessibility — bias, fairness, and representation; accessibility in AI-driven interfaces; designing for user understanding and control
* Week 4: The Future of Information Architecture — emerging IA roles and skills, collaboration with data and AI teams, forward-looking discussion

### About the Instructor

Dr. Rupananda Misra is an Associate Teaching Professor at Rutgers University. He holds an Ed.D. from Teachers College, Columbia University, and completed a postdoctoral fellowship in Biomedical Informatics at Columbia University’s College of Physicians & Surgeons.

His work explores how information architecture can shape human-centered AI systems, focusing on the design of complex information environments that support meaningful decision-making in domains such as healthcare and education.

With over 25 years of teaching experience, Dr. Misra integrates inclusive pedagogy, design thinking, and real-world problem solving into his courses, helping students translate theory into applied practice. He was an Inclusive Practice Fellow at Harvard University (2022–2024) and has completed advanced training at the Stanford d.school. Dr. Misra serves as an Associate Editor of the *Journal of Information Architecture* and as an Education Director of the World IA Association, contributing to the advancement of human-centered design and information architecture in an increasingly AI-driven world.
