# What is Information Architecture?

Ask any group of information architects to define their field, and you'll get as many answers as there are people in the room. This isn't a bug; it's a feature. Information architecture spans digital interfaces, physical spaces, organizational systems, and emerging technologies. The field continues to evolve as new challenges emerge and our understanding deepens.

### The challenge of definition

Traditional definitions often fall short of capturing IA's complexity. Lou Rosenfeld and Peter Morville define information architecture as "the structural design of shared information environments" and "the synthesis of organization, labeling, search, and navigation systems." Richard Saul Wurman, who coined the term in 1975, described effective information architects as those who "make the complex clear; they make the information understandable to other human beings."

While accurate, these definitions don't capture how a hospital information architect designs wayfinding systems that save lives, or how an enterprise IA creates knowledge management structures for global teams. As Rosenfeld and Morville note, there's a paradox in defining IA: "by defining and clarifying semantic concepts, IA makes them more understandable and findable, but at a cost, because definitions are so imperfect and limiting at the same time."

### Our vision: A living resource for a living field

This resource takes a different approach. Instead of offering one definition, we've created a collaborative platform where diverse voices contribute their perspectives on what information architecture means, how it works, and where it's heading. The content evolves as the field does, with contributions from academics, practitioners, and emerging voices.

The best understanding of IA comes not from a single authority, but from the collective wisdom of those who live and breathe this work.

# Agent Instructions: Querying This Documentation

If you need additional information that is not directly available in this page, you can query the documentation dynamically by asking a question.

Perform an HTTP GET request on the current page URL with the `ask` query parameter:

```
GET https://www.information-architecture.world/what-is-ia/what-is-information-architecture.md?ask=<question>
```

The question should be specific, self-contained, and written in natural language.
The response will contain a direct answer to the question and relevant excerpts and sources from the documentation.

Use this mechanism when the answer is not explicitly present in the current page, you need clarification or additional context, or you want to retrieve related documentation sections.
