# Using a common language

Use these terms when you describe World IA Day internally or externally. Consistent language makes event information easier to understand and find.

The preferred terms are listed in English. Use clear, appropriate translations when communicating in your local language.

Contribute translations to the shared lexicon when you can.

## Preferred terms

Use this glossary in website content, social posts, and conversations.

### WIAD

Use `WIAD` as the acronym for World IA Day. Use it when space is limited or in informal communication.

### Event

Use **event** for a local WIAD celebration. Avoid **conference**, which suggests one event format or scale.

### Location

Use **location** for the place hosting a celebration. Avoid **city**, because a location can cover more than one city.

Examples include:

* Rhein-Neckar, Germany, a region including Mannheim and Heidelberg
* San Gabriel Valley, California, part of the Greater Los Angeles area
* Singapore, an island city-state

### Program schedule

Use **program schedule** for the event timeline and its sessions, activities, and speakers.

### Local organizer

Use **local organizer** for a person who brings World IA Day to their community. Avoid **producer** or **leader** for this role.

### Local team

Use **local team** for people who commit to planning and delivering a local event.

### Volunteer

Use **volunteer** for a person who contributes time to a local event.

### Presenter or speaker

Use **presenter** or **speaker** for someone contributing a presentation, workshop, or panel discussion.

### Region

Use **region** for an area that groups participating locations. Regions help people find nearby events.
