# What is World IA Day?

World Information Architecture Day is an annual global celebration of information architecture. It empowers local leaders and grows communities of practice.

Global, regional, and local volunteers produce WIAD together. Each local team designs an event for its own community.

### Local events, shared purpose

Every WIAD event is unique. Formats can include speaker sessions, interactive workshops, [PechaKucha](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/PechaKucha), and demonstrations.

Programs can explore any industry or context. They should highlight information architecture and connect with the global theme.

### Community-led

Local volunteers organize WIAD events for their communities. Events create space for conversation, learning, and connection.

Our work is guided by [Driving Principles](/wiad-organizer-guide/getting-started/driving-principles.md).

### What World IA Day is not

* It is not an industry or marketing conference for selling products or services.
* It does not raise money for organizations outside the local event and World IA Day.
* It is not primarily a platform for professional speakers or motivational coaches.
* It does not focus only on entrepreneurship, business, or technology.

Diverse perspectives and topics help make every event inclusive and valuable.
