About this resource

The "What is Information Architecture?" resource is a collaborative community project that brings together diverse perspectives on information architecture rather than offering a single definition. Instead of creating another static reference, we've built a living platform where practitioners, academics, and emerging voices contribute their insights on what IA means, how it works, and where it's heading.

Why we created this

Traditional definitions of information architecture often fall short of capturing the field's complexity and breadth. As Lou Rosenfeld and Peter Morville noted, there's a paradox in defining IA: "by defining and clarifying semantic concepts, IA makes them more understandable and findable, but at a cost, because definitions are so imperfect and limiting at the same time."

Rather than add another limiting definition, this resource embraces the field's diversity. It acknowledges that IA spans digital interfaces, physical spaces, organizational systems, and emerging technologies, and that practitioners adapt core principles across vastly different contexts.

How it works

This resource is organized around nine key areas, from foundational definitions to emerging technology applications. Each section grows through community contributions: articles, case studies, visual explanations, video content, and other perspectives that illuminate different aspects of information architecture.

We use a simple submission process that accommodates various content formats while maintaining quality through light editorial review. The goal is to represent authentic voices and real experiences rather than polished academic papers.

Who it's for

New to IA? This resource provides multiple entry points to understand the field through definitions, metaphors, and practical examples.

Experienced practitioners? Contribute your perspective or explore theoretical foundations and emerging trends that may inform your practice.

Adjacent professionals? Learn how IA relates to UX design, content strategy, and other disciplines you may work with.

Academics and students? Find both practical insights and theoretical perspectives that bridge education and practice.

Our approach

This project reflects information architecture principles in its design: it's structured for findability, organized to support different user needs, and built to evolve over time. The collaborative model ensures the content stays current and represents the field's diversity.

We prioritize:

  • Multiple perspectives over single definitions

  • Practical experience alongside theoretical knowledge

  • Accessibility and plain language over academic jargon

  • Community contribution over expert authority

  • Evolution and growth over static completeness

Get involved

The resource grows stronger with each new perspective. Share your insights, challenge existing ideas, or share this resource with colleagues who have valuable IA perspectives to add.

Project background

This resource is hosted by the World Information Architecture Association (WIAA) as part of our mission to advance the field of information architecture through community, education, and professional development. The project was developed in 2025 as a collaborative alternative to creating a definition.
