Meet Rupananda Misra, former IA Institute Board member and current Director, Education of World IA Day. Learn about his journey in healthcare UX design.

January 11, 2022 — We’re very excited to introduce some of the people, organizations, and companies behind World IA Da y. Today, we’re introducing a former IA Institute Board member and now Director, Education of World IA Day. Rupananda Misra has been a board member of the IA Institute from 2018 to 2019(when it ended).
Tell us about your journey to information architecture and/or World IA Day
My passion has always been to provide innovative design solutions to complex healthcare challenges. The focus of my research is understanding how patients, healthcare providers, and the public interact with health information. A natural continuation of my doctoral research at Columbia University, critically evaluating government and non-government healthcare websites to improve the user experience, and making complex information understandable and aligned with the organization’s goals. My work focused on identifying each participants’ needs, requirements, and expectations. In my post-doc research work at Columbia University, I examined the use of participatory and user-centered interaction design methods in designing effective health care tools, generating and evaluating the viability of alternative designs.
In my current faculty position at Rutgers University, NJ, we train our students to be full stack designers. They learn to answer some of the challenging questions in designing a product or service. They learn to collect and analyze user behaviors through various ways such as field visits, ethnography studies, surveys, etc. to understand what would make a product or service effective, efficient and desirable. They present their research findings including analysis and recommendations as written reports and interactive prototype presentations.
Why and in what ways are you involved with World IA Day?
I joined World IA Day to meet like minded people who believe in the importance of structuring information and also helping in redefining Information Architecture as it pertains to 21st century. Currently, I am part of the Finance and Education Committees.
What inspires you about information architecture?
My passion is to help people understand the importance of user experience design — especially helping people understand the critical role of Information Architecture within the umbrella of user experience design. As we all know, lack of structure and proper organization can potentially lead to confusion among the users.
I would like to help WIAD to spread the message about the importance of IA in designing products, services, and spaces.
